Ranking NFL Offenses Heading into the '24 Season
With 1 week until the season, Field Vision is taking a look at offensive rankings heading into 2024. We used our Threat Ratings to help evaluate offensive personnel, then combined that with past performance and our view on each offensive coaching staff to make a comprehensive offensive ranking across the NFL. I noted qualitative changes on two teams (Bengals and Vikings) below, but largely stuck to our rankings for this list. These are our 2024 pre-season offensive rankings.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers have elite weapons across the board with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk (?). With the more than competent play of Brock Purdy and elite offensive coaching of Kyle Shanahan, they should be one of the top offenses in the league yet again.
Detroit Lions
With Ben Johnson returning, the Lions should be a force on offense once again. Jared Goff came in 4th in our Threat Ratings and Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs are poised for great years to follow up elite production in 2023.
Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott had his best year to date in 2023 and with CeeDee Lamb re-signed, he should be able to replicate it in 2024. There were doubts about Brian Schottenheimer and Mike McCarthy leading the offense heading into last year, but they should have alleviated those concerns with another 12-win season in 2023.
LA Rams
Couple Sean McVay with elite QB talent in Matthew Stafford and the Rams will always be in the conversation of top offenses. The Rams also have what is one of the most elite wide receiver duos in the NFL in Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua to go with Kyren Williams in the run game.
Kansas City Chiefs
If Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes lead your offense, you’re always a candidate to be near the top. Couple that with Travis Kelce and the addition of Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy to pair with Rashee Rice and the Chiefs could be right back at the top of the league in offense in 2024.
Houston Texans
C.J. Stroud had an elite rookie season and came in 7th in our 2024 Threat Ratings. Bobby Slowik and company also added Stefon Diggs to Niko Collins and Tank Dell on their list of weapons. The Texans should be tough on offense this season.
Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen deserves the benefit of the doubt, and the Bills offense looked better under Joe Brady late last year. We’ll see if they can replicate that success in the run game in 2024. They may need to after losing Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are loaded with speed with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane all having sub 4.4 40’s to their name. Tua Tagovailoa simply has to distribute the ball to the playmakers and the Dolphins offense will have no trouble making waves.
Baltimore Ravens
The combination of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry makes the Ravens elite on the ground. The question, as always with Baltimore, will be the downfield passing game. With Mark Andrews back in the fold and Zay Flowers heading into year 2, they should have enough to be solid there as well.
Green Bay Packers
Jordan Love got paid on a small sample size this off-season and he’ll be looking to prove he’s worth it in 2024. The Packers have a long list of young skill players and brought in veteran running back Josh Jacobs to go with them this off season.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are much more than the tush push. They have elite weapons outside with A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith and added pro bowl running back Saquon Barkley this off-season. Jalen Hurts orchestrates it all. 2024 will tell us if there offensive line survives the departure of all-world center Jason Kelce.
Cincinnatti Bengals
Threat Ratings didn’t love all the Bengals, especially Joe Burrow, as much as the eye test does and we admittedly bumped the Bengals up qualitatively here. There’s no doubt when Burrow, Jamar Chase, Tee Higgins and company are clicking on all cylinders, they can be as tough to stop as anyone. They just need them all healthy at the same time.
New Orleans Saints
After Chris Olave and a long in the tooth Alvin Kamara, there’s not much to shout about on the Saints offense. Derek Carr is competent, but he won’t elevate the play of anyone around him.
Cleveland Browns
Amari Cooper always produces more than anyone expects, but Deshaun Watson has not even shown flashes of his former self in the last couple of years. Unless that changes, the Browns can’t expect to be more than mediocre on offense in 2024.
Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith showed the last couple of years that he can distribute the ball with the right weapons around him. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett have both been productive for a long time and the Seahawks are hoping for a breakout second year from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Kenneth Walker III gives punch to the running game as well.
Chicago Bears
This is a team who could sky-rocket up this list if Caleb Williams can be what everyone in Chicago is hoping he is. With DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze, Williams will have plenty of options to throw to for a breakout season in 2024.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Baker Mayfield proved competent in 2023. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin still have juice in the tank and the Bucs offense surprised a lot of people last year. Can they replicate it in 2024? Only if Mayfield repeats last year’s performance.
Arizona Cardinals
Kyler Murray returns for his first full season since tearing his ACL in 2022. The Cardinals looked a lot better after he returned last season and the addition of all-time draft prospect Marvin Harrison Jr. could be just what the Cardinals need to take a step forward in 2024.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Trevor Lawrence has been fine, but the Jaguars are still looking for the elite prospect they thought they drafted with the number 1 overall pick in 2021.
Atlanta Falcons
The addition of Kirk Cousins could see the Falcons move way up this list, but we’ll wait and see. Bijan Robinson is an elite talent, and we think Drake London and Kyle Pitts are great, but we still need to see it on an NFL field.
Minnesota Vikings
I qualitatively bumped the Vikings down here because despite having Justin Jefferson, if Sam Darnold is your leading option at QB in 2024, you’re probably not set up for much success. I’d still look for production from Justin Jefferson because he’s the best receiver on the planet, but the rest of the Vikings weapons could struggle.
Indianapolis Colts
Can Anthony Richardson, who’s started 17 games since High School, really project as an NFL Quarterback this season? He has the talent, but with his accuracy issues, forgive me if I have my doubts.
LA Chargers
Justin Herbert is a great talent, but there’s not a lot left around him in Jim Harbaughs first season at the helm. The Chargers are changing their brand of football, but we’ll have to see if they can do that in one off-season.
Tennessee Titans
Will Levis is a big question mark, and the Titans weapons may be past their prime. We’ll have to see if Levis can be an above average quarterback and if Deandre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley still have it in the tank.
New York Jets
Is a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers enough to turn around one of the worst offenses in the NFL from last year. The Jets are hoping so. Breece Hall is electric, and Garrett Wilson gives Rodgers at least one great weapon to throw to.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers may have traded one bad Quarterback for 2 this off-season. They are hoping Arthur Smith can inject some life into this offense, but based on the Falcons production over the last several years, I have my doubts.
New York Giants
The signing of Daniel Jones may go down as one of the worst contracts in NFL history. The Giants are just counting down the days until they can move on from it and bring in a viable NFL quarterback.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos have been putrid on offense over the last several years. They’re hoping Bo Nix can perform at a higher level and turn Sean Payton’s tutelage into more success. The weapons around him don’t provide a ton of support though.
Las Vegas Raiders
Gardner Minshew is nothing short of a stop gap in NFL quarterbacking. If the Raiders are going to take a step forward, they’ll need to address their quarterback situation at some point.
New England Patriots
The Patriots drafted Drake Maye this off-season, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have virtually no weapons for him to work with. It seems like a problem the Patriots have had for a decade now.
Washington Commanders
I think the Commanders could be a lot better than this if Jayden Daniels produces, but I didn’t feel strongly enough about his prospects to qualitatively change the rankings. After Terry McLaurin, Washington has a lot of question marks at wide receiver.
Carolina Panthers
Bryce Young did not impress as a rookie and there’s not a lot else to be excited about on the Panthers offense either. Nothing the Panthers did this off-season gives hope for a big step forward on offense.
